# Rename a folder

You can rename any folder or subfolder in your Drive to keep your asset structure clear and up to date. Renaming a folder only changes its display name — the folder's slug and all file URLs within it remain unchanged, so no article references are broken.

---

## Why rename a folder?

A well-named folder structure makes it faster for contributors to find, upload, and organize assets. Renaming becomes necessary when:

- A category or section of your knowledge base has been renamed and you want the Drive to reflect it.
- A folder was created with a temporary or generic name (such as *New folder* or *Test*) and needs a permanent, descriptive one.
- Your team has adopted a new naming convention and existing folder names need to be brought in line.
- A folder's scope has changed — for example, it previously held assets for one product but now covers a broader range.

---

## What changes and what doesn't

Before renaming a folder, it is important to understand what the rename affects.

| What changes | What stays the same |
| --- | --- |
| The folder's display name in the Drive and left navigation pane. | The folder's slug (URL identifier) — it is not updated when you rename. |
| How the folder appears to contributors browsing the Drive. | All file URLs within the folder — article image references remain intact. |
| The name shown in category-to-folder mapping panels. | Any existing category-to-folder mappings — they continue to work after a rename. |

> [!NOTE]
> **NOTE** System folders cannot be renamed. You can identify system folders by the shield icon next to their name in the Drive.

2. In the left navigation pane, locate the folder or subfolder you want to rename. Folders and subfolders are displayed in tree-view style.

The folder is updated with the new name immediately across the Drive and left navigation pane.

## Best practices

- **Mirror your category names.** Keeping Drive folder names consistent with your knowledge base categories and subcategories makes it easier for contributors to know where to upload assets without having to guess. When you rename a category, update the corresponding Drive folder name to match.
- **Use clear, descriptive names.** Avoid abbreviations or internal shorthand that only some contributors will understand. Prefer names like *Product screenshots — Onboarding* over *PS-ONB*.
- **Establish a naming convention early.** Agree on a standard format for folder names (for example, using hyphens, sentence case, or topic-based prefixes) before your Drive grows. Renaming dozens of folders later is time-consuming, even though it carries no technical risk.
- **Communicate renames to your team.** Contributors who have bookmarked or starred a folder will still have access to it after a rename, but informing the team avoids confusion when the name changes unexpectedly.
- **Do not rely on the display name as a permanent identifier.** Since the slug does not update when you rename a folder, avoid using the folder name as a reference in external tools or documentation. Use the folder's location path instead.
