You can move folders and subfolders to any location within your Drive hierarchy. Moving a folder reorganizes where your assets are stored without breaking any article references — all file URLs remain unchanged after the move.
Why move a folder?
As your knowledge base grows, your Drive structure often needs to evolve with it. Moving folders lets you keep your Drive organized without disrupting any content that references the files inside.
Common reasons to move a folder include:
Restructuring the Drive to mirror a reorganized category hierarchy in your knowledge base.
Promoting a subfolder to a root-level folder (or demoting a root folder into another) as your content scope changes.
Consolidating folders from multiple contributors into a shared, standardized structure.
Grouping folders by project, team, or content type after an initial ad-hoc setup.
NOTE
Moving a folder does not affect the file URLs of files within it. All images linked to articles remain intact after the move. System folders cannot be moved.
Choosing the right method
Document360 provides two ways to move a folder. Use the comparison below to decide which fits your situation.
Method | Best for | Supports bulk move? |
|---|---|---|
More option | Moving one or multiple folders to a specific destination, especially when the destination is deep in the hierarchy or hard to locate visually. | Yes — select multiple folders, then use the Move action from the toolbar. |
Drag and drop | Quickly repositioning a single folder when the destination is visible in the left navigation pane. | No — drag and drop moves one folder at a time. |
Move a folder using the More option
To move a folder using the More option,
Click the Drive icon in the left navigation bar.
Hover over the folder you want to move and click the More icon.
Select Move. The Move files panel appears.

Select the destination folder from the list. Use the search field to quickly find the destination by typing keywords.
Click Move.
The folder, along with its subfolders and files, is moved to the selected destination.
Move multiple folders at once
To move more than one folder at the same time,
Click the Drive icon in the left navigation bar.
Select one or more folders by clicking the checkboxes next to their names.
Click Move from the toolbar that appears at the top.

Select the destination folder and click Move.

Move a folder using drag and drop
To move a folder using drag and drop,
Click the Drive icon in the left navigation bar.
In the left navigation pane, click and hold the folder you want to move.
Drag the folder to the desired destination in the navigation pane.

Drop the folder onto the target folder to move it inside.
NOTE
Drag and drop moves one folder at a time. To move multiple folders simultaneously, use the More option method described above.
Best practices
Mirror your category structure. Keep your Drive folder hierarchy aligned with your knowledge base categories and subcategories. This makes it easier to locate assets and set up category-to-folder mappings. Refer to Mapping a category with a folder in Drive for more information.
Move folders before setting up category mappings. If you plan to map a category to a specific Drive folder, finalize your folder structure first. Moving a folder after a category mapping is in place does not break the mapping, but planning ahead avoids unnecessary changes.
Use search when the destination is deeply nested. The Move files panel includes a search field. Use it instead of manually scrolling through a large folder tree to reduce errors.
Check file dependencies before a large restructure. While moving a folder does not break file URLs, it is good practice to review which articles reference files in the folder before making sweeping changes. Refer to File actions in Drive for guidance on viewing file dependencies.
Avoid moving the default folder without updating the setting. If the folder you are moving is set as the default folder, it continues to function as the default after the move. However, if the move changes the organizational intent of that folder, consider updating the default folder setting. Refer to Set a default folder for more information.
